Can Anything Really Happen in a Stanley Cup Game 7?
The Q Beat
You’ve heard the cliche a million times (which is why it’s a cliche): “Oh, anything can happen in a Game 7!” That’s what people always say about home ice advantage really not meaning much once it gets to one decisive game.
The truth is, though, when it comes to a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, theoretically anything could happen, but it usually doesn’t. There have been 14 game 7s in Cup Final history and the home team has won 12 of them (the Rangers naturally won in 1994, but lost on the road in double overtime in 1950).
The only road teams to have won a Game 7 are the 1945 Maple Leafs (at Detroit) and 1971 Canadiens (at Chicago). Each won a one-goal decision with a score in the third period.
